Christian Wörns, born in 1972 in Mannheim, is widely regarded as one of the best German defenders of his generation. He made his debut in the Bundesliga at just 17 years old — at that time the fourth youngest debutant ever — and established himself over the years as a defensive anchor at Bayer Leverkusen and later at Borussia Dortmund. At the 1998 World Cup, he was considered the best player of the German tournament until his red card in the quarter-finals against Croatia. He played a total of 66 international matches for Germany between 1992 and 2005.
