Internationally, he was an Algerian national hero: His goal in the 2009 World Cup qualifying play-off against Egypt — a stunning strike in the 40th minute — took Algeria to the World Cup for the first time since 1986. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was the captain of the Algerian national team — he played a total of 53 international matches and scored 6 goals.
